Outreach Programs

Together with Conservation International (CI Brazil) the workshops were organized for school students, explaining what nature conservation is and how this process is set in different countries. An interactive seminar was held with participation of local experts in marine conservation from Humpback whale research institute, CEPENE and CI Brazil. During the meeting international participants gave talks describing marine diversity in their home countries, threats to marine environment and local communities and legal, economical and cultural framework in which conservation process occurs. Brazilian experts shared their experience in research and conservation conducted in the state of Bahia.

In colaboration with "Open your eyes to science" which is an education program for first and second year high school students of Municipal school in Caravelas the participants visited Abrolhos marine reserve, the first marine protected area established in Brazil. Later on an intense two-days field trip was arranged to Carumbau marine reserve located in Caraiva area. The reserve was established in 2000 as a Marine Extractive Reserve – RESEX, an area co-managed by local communities, government, and NGOs. During the study tour the participants got familiar with traditional life style of local communities, communicated with fishermen and people involved in tourist services, visited areas where the artisanal fisheries are based as well as the beach area and coastal zones allocated for recreation.

Here is a fascinating video describing our experiences about this wonderful journey we have had so far...

We have also prepared some outreach material such as a leaflet which will enable others to understand our program and encourage them to initiate some of their own, creating a network and thus reaching out to several other budding and inspiring marine conservationists out there.... You can download it          in a PDF format.
